Traffic violations in India are quite common. They even go unchecked due to the increasing population and the lack of human resources, fewer resources, and inadequate technology.

It is not rare for us to witness someone casually jumping a red-light or not pulling over if the cops ask us to. Over and above all of this, most people try to escape the situation of getting fined by bribing the authorities.

They do this since they want to avoid the hassle of submitting their license, going to court, and dealing with the further procedure. It is a tiresome job as per them, and bribing is an easier solution.

However, with the recent introduction of the New Motor Vehicles Act 2019, things have gotten better. Authorities have become stricter, if not totally blind to the vicious circle of corruption.

The new act instills the integration of brand-new technology, higher penalties, and stricter enforcement of both – the technology and the penalties.

This came into existence to ensure an improvement in road safety and responsibility amongst the Indian citizens.

The Indian government has adopted various Intelligence Traffic Management Systems to enhance road safety and curtail corruption. This enables them to monitor traffic, impose surveillance, and enforce and penalize traffic offenders.

In fact, the UP government has a separate website dedicated to this, making it all the easier for the people residing in UP to check and pay their challans online.

What is E-Challan?

Several Indian states use traffic e-challan to ensure improved tracking, better enforcement, and efficient and timely collection of fines. It is like the regular challan, only in an electronic form.

High technology has enabled red light violence detection, speed violation detection, automatic number plate detection, and a lot more to catch the traffic rule violators.

This has made traffic-related services convenient and easily accessible to the public and effective for the authorities to monitor.

Once these systems recognize the offenders, an e-challan is sent on their registered mobile number or e-mail ID.

The challan is sent via an android application and web getaway. It is associated with the web portal of the government, called Vahan and Sarathi.

You can make online challan payments and also check your challan status on these websites.

Introducing e-challan has also minimized the chances of the violators scooting away by only paying a fraction of the challan (when in physical form), known as a bribe.

It has also decreased the payment process time because everything with the internet is simpler and faster!

The payments are directly credited to the concerned RTO’s account, avoiding any intermediaries or unethical practices coming in between.

How does it work?

You can either get pulled over by the police or come under the automatic surveillance cameras while violating any traffic rules. Once this happens, an e-challan is immediately issued to you via an online android based mobile app and backend web app, connected directly to the RTO’s database.

Once it is issued under your name, you need to go to the designated website of the RTO and check your challan status. Here, you can immediately clear your penalty without visiting the local RTO office. Payments are made through debit cards, credit cards, or net banking.

Legal actions are taken if you fail to make the payment in the allotted timeline.
